Torstein grew up in Notodden, Telemark. Like most Norwegians he started skiing at a young age and was part of a ski jumping club as a young man. He started Telemark skiing in his youth, left his town to go to university and the military before joining the workforce. He eventually took a job in 2009 with Rottefella after answering an ad in the newspaper.
