In Episode #38 Derek is joined by Uruguayan football legend Gus Poyet for part 2 of this podcast. If you have not heard part 1, please go back and listen. Gus talks about moving across London from Chelsea to Spurs where he eventually retired from playing football. The decision to move was an easy one for Gus, the first year being great but admits his last year wasn't enjoyable. We discuss Gus's coaching career so far; from starting as an assistant manager alongside Dennis Wise at Swindon then Leeds United to promotion with Brighton & Hove Albion, which he admits is a managerial highlight, to being sacked live while reporting on the BBC. During his time at Brighton Gus won League One Manager of the Year. Gus talks about his time at Sunderland, becoming the first Uruguayan to manage in the Premier League. He steered the club to the League Cup Final but unfortunately lost out to Manchester City. Poyet defeated José Mourinho in his first-ever home league defeat in the Premier League as Chelsea manager, a 2–1 win to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge and pulled off a miracle saving the team from relegation. We look to the future where Gus explains he aims to get back in to management, he reveals he almost took a job in Scotland at Kilmarnock FC and offers some advice to Steven Gerrard and his Rangers FC side.
