TotalEnergies, a major energy company, has vehemently denied allegations of war crimes, torture, and forced disappearances in Mozambique. These claims were made in a complaint filed with Frances National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutors Office, linking the companys Mozambique LNG project to alleged abuses in the Cabo Delgado region during 2021. TotalEnergies insists these accusations are baseless. The complaint followed a Politico investigation suggesting Mozambican soldiers committed abuses near the Afungi LNG site. However, TotalEnergies states that all its project staff had already been evacuated by early April 2021, after an attack by an Islamic State-affiliated group. The company also mentioned that Politico has not shared the data or documents behind its allegations. Cabo Delgado has been a region of conflict since 2017, with militant groups targeting villages and government forces. Following the evacuation, Mozambican security forces took control of the Afungi site, leading to the contested allegations. TotalEnergies has asked Mozambican authorities to investigate and is cooperating fully. The Daily News Now! — Every city. Every story. AI-powered. Hosted on Acast.
