TotalEnergies insists these accusations are baseless. The complaint followed a Politico investigation suggesting Mozambican soldiers committed abuses near the Afungi LNG site. However, TotalEnergies states that all its project staff had already been evacuated by early April 2021, after an attack by an Islamic State-affiliated group. The company also mentioned that Politico has not shared the data or documents behind its allegations. Cabo Delgado has been a region of conflict since 2017, with militant groups targeting villages and government forces. Following the evacuation, Mozambican security forces took control of the Afungi site, leading to the contested allegations.
