S2E5: On the Art of Self-Directed Learning

I have often observed, both in myself and in others, a peculiar phenomenon: that knowledge acquired under compulsion makes but a temporary impression upon the mind, while that which is sought of one's own volition takes root and flourishes. Having spent much of my life in pursuit of understanding—sometimes guided by formal instruction, sometimes wandering the paths of my own curiosity—I find myself drawn to contemplate the nature of self-directed learning, that most natural yet elusive practice which seems at once the simplest and most complex approach to education.
